I’m a school librarian at the Dr. Albert D. Holland High School of Technology in Boston, serving grades 7-12. This is my 14th year as a librarian in schools. My school serves an incredibly multicultural population of students, representing Cape Verde, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and many Caribbean islands. 40% of our students speak two languages, some speaking three or more! We are also transitioning from a more traditional high school to a school that is expanding career pathways programs in Biotech and Design and Visual Communications and implementing major growth in technology use and skills.
We have a new principal who is fired up with lots of ideas and a new school name that includes technology. There is change happening and more on the way. It’s exciting to be part of a change in culture and educational focus. All of this aligns well with what I’m learning in the Certificate in Digital Literacy program. Sometimes it’s difficult to implement new ideas from professional development into a real work context. It’s nice to be in a place that is open to new ideas and moving in the same direction as my professional development.
