Generative AI in the Writing Classroom:

My Newest Favorite Frenemy

WORKSHOP FACILITATOR: FRANK ROMANELLI

Using generative artificial intelligence in the teaching of writing is just one of the topics on my mind for this year’s Summer Institute in Digital Literacy.

Since October 2022, my relationship with chatbots has evolved. Like any rapid advancement in digital literacy, this brings a range of opinions, from non-specific pessimism to uncritical optimism. Now, my new classroom assistant, GAI, is a useful, if not indispensable, frenemy.

To put it in plain terms, “We got a lot to talk about,” and the Summer Institute in Digital Literacy has been the place to do it for the past twelve years. It has been a place for me to teach and learn with returning and new people, form genuine, lasting professional and personal relationships, and, inevitably, grow as a person and a professional. Even what you are about to see and hear is the result of the Summer Institute igniting my curiosity to learn more and expand my literacy with more digital opportunities.

So, let’s have an interactive discussion/workshop to share how our students, our colleagues, and we can critically use GAI to enhance our teaching, learning, and communication. We can explore how to use GAI ethically and critically while effectively experimenting together. We can also discuss the value of our favorite chatbots and other AI tools and resources.

This screen video is an interactive deep-dive discussion I created with Google NotebookLM. Join me at the Summer Institute, and I’ll show you how I did it and more…
