Summer Institute in Digital Literacy?

Yes, Please!

Learn why Susan, an elementary science teacher from Warwick, RI is looking forward to returning to the Summer Institute in Digital Literacy for the fourth time this summer.

BY SUSAN UNGER

Here I go again, for the fourth time! Why? This is my story. My first summer, in what is known as Tier One, was nothing but a leap of faith. I was sure that I needed support to become “digitally literate” but was not even sure what those words meant to me personally or career-wise. To my great delight, in Tier One I met enthusiastic, kind, expert people who generously shared as much knowledge with me as I could absorb. The vibe was electric and inspirational. I was proud of my accomplishments by the end of the week. What also impressed me was that our schedule included a mix of social events to foil the demands of brain-expanding activities! We kicked back and had a great time. We shared our storiesand made new friends.

When I had the chance to consider Tier Two (the leadership strand), I took it. Why not share what I learned with others in the same generous spirit? Why not honor all those who inspired me? I could surely use leadership tips to pass along some tenets of digital literacy as well as digital tools and skills. Pay it forward! Tier Two was just as inspirational and rewarding as Tier One.

On the other hand, Tier Three (otherwise known as Choose Your Own Adventure), was mostly for me. In Tier Three, I mentored others, presented some of my own work, and best of all, used the positive energy of the group to make some headway on a project of my own. I organized and wrote material for comprehensive exams using digital formats and spaces to help process several years of classwork and projects. I found Tier Three to be validating and empowering.

Now, I know what you are thinking. Why would someone ever repeat a Tier Three experience?

Once you know how it’s done, why come back for more? I am excited to launch a new phase of my career, one of authorship. I have so many projects waiting to come to fruition: a science picture book series, a book of reflections on science education, and more. I received an email about the new, hybrid format for the Summer Institute in Digital Literacy and decided THIS would be the best place to go for information, new skills, great vibes, and inspiration! If you meet me in the hallway, I will happily tell you about my projects! See you there!
